Athena “Tina” Missiriotis passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at the Washington County Health Center. She was born on Oct 23, 1916 in Dafnonas, Chios, Greece.
She was the daughter of Triantafilo and Emmanuel Stirou, one of eleven children.
She was married to Alexander Missiriotis (former owner of the Charleroi Grille) in Greece on Jan 19, 1938 and came to America on the S.S. Saturnia, sailing from Patras, Greece on June 25, 1938 arriving at Ellis Island, New York on July 7, 1938. Settling in Charleroi and being a proud person wanting to be an American citizen to the fullest, she went to school and completed 80 hours of instruction in “Americanization” and earned a Certificate of Achievement on March 18, 1955. It was her proudest moment considering it was unusual for immigrants then to even learn to read and write English. As an avid homemaker she received numerous ribbons for her trophy flowers and baking delicacies. She wrote poetry and composed many songs in her native language. Crocheting was her true love, even having crocheted an evening gown for her daughter. The loss of her sight due to macular degeneration was a crushing blow to her but she still managed to get by even up to her passing.
She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Angel in 1942 and her husband Alexander on July 23, 1973.
She is survived by her daughter, Irene, from Uniontown; son, George, and wife Andrea, from Belle Vernon; granddaughter, Athena, from Belle Vernon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins in the U.S., Greece and Australia.
